Summer Vacation Activities

Written by Iris Dakar

School is out for the year! We are so proud of our children in our foster homes for finishing up the school year strong! The children are now at home at the base, and every year we put on a program of activities during the month of July. Different members of our team take turns each day of the week to spend the morning with the children from 9am-1pm to sing songs, learn from inspiring stories, play games, and other fun activities.

Some of the kids’ favorites were freeze dance, coloring, playing “hide and seek”, going to the local beach, and swimming in a pool in Dakar that had a water slide! The children also had a day of practical work cleaning up around base and our older children had a class with our team’s social worker to raise awareness about adolescence and healthy behaviors.

In addition to our July program, a short-term volunteer from Switzerland came and directed a musical comedy with our children and other children in the village. The children had a blast diligently practicing their roles and songs for the play during the month of June. They presented it for all the parents the first week of July. We were all so proud and had fun singing along with them!

We love taking this month to be extra intentional with our children while they are here at home with us!
