Children’s Day in Chimoio

Written by Jennifer Wenningkamp

This year Iris Chimoio ROG Children’s Center, neighboring schools, and children’s centers in the community came together on June 1st for one of the biggest celebrations of the year – Children’s Day. The day was filled with fun and celebration as adults and children look the future by celebrating our youngest generation.

The staff and kids at Iris Chimoio participated in a city-wide Children’s Day parade along the city main street with singing, sirens, and new shirts and uniforms. A special guest official joined in the children’s celebration meal that was followed by his speech reminding the children and staff of ways to avoid childhood marriage, and the importance of pursuing an education.

The Children’s Day celebration went late into the afternoon as Thomas, the Iris Chimoio co-director and coach of our football/soccer team 'Almas para Cristo' (Souls for Christ) led the teams in the first official game on our brand new, soccer pitch. The 'Almas para Cristo' and the neighboring team tied 3 to 3. They are all looking forward to a tie-breaker game, and many more matches in the future.
