Kenya: Retouch Birikani
About Retouch Birikani
Chris & Jennifer Hadsell began working in Africa in 2011, starting in Kenya with no direction other than they heard the Lord say “go”. Retouch was birthed from a moment of radical obedience in the village of Birikani. In the middle of a dry, cracked bush area we met a 80-year-old village elder of another faith. Desperate to bring education to his forgotten community, he offered us 12 acres of land to build a school, even saying we could build the church first. We said yes without money or resources, watching God move so miraculously that the elder himself surrendered his life to Jesus at 83 years old. Now, Retouch exists to create opportunities for Justice, Education & Encounter in vulnerable communities, through radical obedience, empowered by the love of Jesus.
At the heart of our school is the Plates of Promise feeding program, which serves over 450 children two hot, daily meals. This program eliminated the malnutrition that was rampant in the village - transforming frail, sick children into healthy, joyful students. Where children once sat on rocks in a single mud hut, God has raised up permanent primary and secondary campuses alongside a thriving church that disciples the whole community & distributes solar-powered audio Bibles in the native language. The ministry is led by native, Patrick Julo, and 40+ other locals who are focused on radical faith, Spirit-led revival, and discipling the next generation.
Give Education
In a village where children once sat on rocks in mud huts dreaming of a classroom, sponsorship brings hope to life. Our school is entirely free to the community, and we rely on donations to keep it running. We provide excellent education, daily hot meals, and gospel discipleship to every student who attends. We also surround their family with support and assist with emergency food when crisis strikes. Step into their story today and give a child the chance to know Jesus, stay safe, and thrive.
Donate a Meal
When we first began, we witnessed children with sunken eyes and yellowed hair - a heartbreaking sign of malnutrition. Every day, multiple children were taken to the local clinic for unknown illnesses and general lethargy. Their performance at school was very low. They had trouble concentrating and engaging. But God had other plans for these little ones, and Plates of Promise was born with the goal that no child in our community go to bed hungry ever again. This program ensures that children continue to have access to nutritious meals and never feel the pangs of malnutrition again.
Urgent Needs
We often asked what our most urgent needs are, as they change throughout the school year. These special projects are unique opportunities to make a lasting impact in various ways. The main projects we are needing at the moment is renovation for the Primary School, Laboratory Equipment and funds for Graduation.
