Big Transitions in 2021 for Iris Nicaragua

Written by Kara Westermann

2020 brought lots of changes to all of us. For us personally, it brought us a great deal of revelations as well. We experienced a year where we had no mission teams and where we were able to slow down and evaluate our ministry and our call from God. It didn’t take long for us to realize in this season that we have strayed pretty far from God’s original call on our lives. God has called us to be disciples who make disciples and to live in faith through His Holy Spirit. Yet a majority of our focus has been on feeding centers and scholarship programs and other forms of mercy ministries. These things are not bad in and of themselves. However, I (Kara) felt a deep conviction that we are not walking in obedience to the Great Commission and to what Jesus has asked of each of us who profess to love Him and live for Him.

2021 began with many changes. Several of these changes were not a surprise as we have felt for some time to reform or step away from certain programs and projects. In obedience to Christ, we have given away our large feeding center in Matagalpa as well as our feeding program and scholarship program in the Nueva Vida trash dump and our program in the La Chureca trash dump (Ville Guadelupe).

Our focus has shifted into preaching the gospel, healing the sick and helping people to be truly born again and to live for Christ as His disciples. I recently returned from 3 weeks of living on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua where we saw 30 people receive the gospel, repent of their sins, be baptized in water, be set free from demons and filled with the Holy Spirit. Those new brothers and sisters in the Lord are now in fellowship groups and being discipled. Praise the Lord! We saw countless others healed by Jesus when we prayed for them and many seeds were planted and watered.

As our ministry makes a large shift and change, we have been remembering all the beauty and breakthroughs and all that God has taught us in the last 8 years. I am beyond grateful for all that the Lord has done. I am even more grateful and excited for all that He will do as we surrender all to Him and learn to live as His disciples even more. If you still wish to specifically send funds to be used for the children of Nicaragua, please let me know and I will direct you to good friends of ours who will continue to feed and educate the children here, including many of the ones we were formerly feeding and educating.

If you still feel to support our work here in Nicaragua we would of course be very grateful. We serve the Lord of the harvest and what an honor and joy to co-labor with Christ for the things that are eternal! I look forward to sending more updates of the lives that are changed and of the disciples we have the honor or teaching and walking with. Big hugs to you all and we all send our love to each of you.

Love and hugs,
Kara
